McDonald Observatory Seeking Experienced Mechanical Engineer for Hobby-Eberly Telescope

The McDonald Observatory is inviting applications for a seasoned Mechanical Engineer to join their team at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET), a leading facility in astronomical research located 16 miles from Fort Davis and 440 miles from The University of Texas at Austin campus. This full-time role is pivotal in maintaining and innovating the mechanical systems of the HET, which operates 24/7.

The position calls for a professional with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and extensive experience in mechanical, optical, electronic, vacuum, cryogenic, and software engineering. These skills are crucial as they apply to the development of cutting-edge research instrumentation used in groundbreaking astronomy projects, including the exploration of exoplanets and the study of cosmic phenomena.

Responsibilities of the role include leading a team of technicians, overseeing the maintenance and improvement of the telescope’s mechanical systems, and participating in design and fabrication of new systems. The engineer will also be involved in daily operations and supervision, emphasizing the mentoring of team members and ensuring the operational efficiency of the HET.

Applicants should be proficient in 3D CAD software such as Solid Works or Inventor, and have project management skills. The ability to work flexible hours, including responding to emergencies outside regular business hours, is essential for this position.

“The engineer will play a critical role in the ongoing enhancement of the HET’s capabilities and support our mission to unravel the mysteries of the universe,” stated the HET Facility Manager. The role includes a comprehensive benefits package with competitive health benefits, retirement plans, and paid leave among other perks.

The successful candidate must be prepared to work in the diverse environmental conditions of West Texas, participate in the Observatory’s Emergency Response Team, and potentially reside within the Observatory’s residential community.

For those looking to contribute to a world-class research facility and bring their technical expertise to the forefront of astronomical discovery, more information and application details are available at UT Austin Job Portal.
