McDonald Observatory Receives $4 Million Gift from Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation to Enhance Visitor Experience

McDonald Observatory announced a significant $4 million donation from the Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation, aimed at revitalizing the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center and broadening the observatory’s public outreach and educational programs. The gift will facilitate major updates to enhance the visitor experience, reflecting the observatory’s commitment to making astronomy accessible to all.

Taft Armandroff, the observatory’s director, expressed gratitude for the foundation’s contribution. “Renovations in the visitors center translate into big impacts for our education and outreach programming,” Armandroff noted. Annually, the center welcomes approximately 75,000 guests who learn about the fundamentals of astronomy and the observatory’s pivotal role in the field.

The Frank N. Bash Visitors Center, initially opened in 2002 and renamed in 2006 to honor former director Frank N. Bash, was designed to accommodate the growing number of visitors, significantly more than its predecessor’s capacity of 20,000 people a year. The forthcoming updates will introduce exhibits on advanced astronomical topics including exoplanets, galaxy evolution, star lifecycles, and cosmic phenomena such as dark matter and dark energy. Additionally, the updates will feature the Giant Magellan Telescope, symbolizing the next generation of astronomical discovery.

These enhancements are part of a broader initiative to provide transformative science education through new films, audio tours, renovations at other telescope sites, and expanded outdoor facilities. “Our thanks to the Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation, as well as the project’s many other supporters,” Armandroff said, acknowledging the vital role of these partnerships in fostering public understanding of science.

The Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation, which merged from two separate entities in 2002, supports a variety of causes including science, education, the arts, and human services. Founded initially in 1945 by Harry W. Bass Sr., and later expanded by his son, the foundation has consistently backed initiatives that enrich the lives of Texans.
