Fort Davis Artisan Doug Moreland Carves a Niche with Chainsaw Artistry

At The WoodShed, located at 205 State St in the heart of Fort Davis, Doug Moreland turns chunks of wood into intricate sculptures with the buzz of his chainsaw. Known throughout Far West Texas for his unique blend of art and craftsmanship, Moreland offers locals and visitors alike a glimpse into a rugged tradition reimagined through modern tools and techniques.

Raised in a family where western art and hand carving were staples, Doug initially learned the ropes from his father, Glenn Moreland, who still works just a few blocks away. However, Doug’s journey into chainsaw carving began in 1998 in Ruidoso, NM, marking a departure from the meticulous hand tools to the dynamic and fast-paced chainsaw, sparking a passion that would define his career.

After a stint in Pigeon Forge, TN, where he and his band traded music gigs for chainsaw art, Doug eventually settled just south of Austin, TX, where he refined his skills under the tutelage of master woodworker RL Blair from 2009 to 2018. His return to Far West Texas brought him to Fort Davis, where he now creates and displays his art downtown.

Moreland’s choice of medium—primarily softer woods like juniper and pine—reflects both practical and aesthetic considerations, ensuring his sculptures are both durable and detailed. He treats each piece with a protective sealant to enhance longevity, especially for outdoor display.

Visitors to The WoodShed can witness Doug Moreland in action, transforming raw wood into detailed sculptures that embody the spirit of the West.
