As part of its “Heart of Marathon” capital campaign, the Marathon Public Library is taking significant steps to preserve local heritage by transforming the historic schoolhouse into a new history museum. The restoration process has uncovered the original adobe structure, promising exciting possibilities for the project.
During the restoration, workers removed old paneling and concrete to reveal the schoolhouse’s original adobe walls, a testament to the building’s enduring construction. Joey Benton of Marfa, an expert in adobe restoration with extensive experience across Texas and New Mexico, has been instrumental in the assessment and planning stages.
“We are excited that both the adobe and the foundation of the building are in great shape and ready for the next chapter,” said a spokesperson for the Marathon Public Library. This discovery marks a significant milestone in the restoration process, ensuring that the structure is stable and capable of hosting the new museum.
The community is invited to follow the progress of the restoration and support the capital campaign as the library moves forward with its plans to enrich Marathon’s cultural landscape through this historical preservation effort.
