“Grandma’s Ranchito” is not just a story—it’s a heartfelt connection woven through the pages of a book, aimed at bridging geographical distances with emotional closeness. Inspired by her desire to connect with her grandson who lives in Maryland, Dr. Qvarnstrom crafted a narrative that brings the flora, fauna, and familial warmth of West Texas vividly to life. The book integrates Spanish vocabulary to capture the essence of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands’ unique culture, emphasizing the region’s bilingual heritage.

“I wrote ‘Grandma’s Ranchito’ to give my grandson a virtual visit with me,” Dr. Qvarnstrom explained. “Through the story and the illustrations, I wanted to make the wildlife and plants of West Texas come alive. To capture the unique culture of the U.S. and Mexico borderlands, I included Spanish words in the text. To celebrate the bonds of family and intergenerational relationships, I describe the adventures of the grandson and grandmother together.”

Her book resonates deeply with themes of family bonding and cultural exploration, making it a significant addition to any young reader’s library. The students at Alpine Elementary were visibly inspired by the storytelling session, which was also an opportunity for them to learn about the importance of family ties and cultural awareness.
