On December 14, 2024, Fort Leaton State Historic Site invites visitors to immerse themselves in a traditional Mexican Christmas celebration with its annual Posada event, held from 6 to 8 p.m. Located on FM 170 East in Presidio, this historic site offers a unique glimpse into the 1800s Texas-Mexico border life through its expansive 23-acre compound.
The Posada, a vibrant tradition dating back to the 16th century in Mexico, reenacts the biblical journey of Mary and Joseph as they seek shelter in Bethlehem. At Fort Leaton, this event is brought to life with musicians, costumed children, and a procession that echoes the festivities celebrated across cities and towns along Texas’ southern border.
Fort Leaton, one of the largest historic adobe structures in Texas, comprises 40 original rooms including a blacksmith shop, granary, family parlor, dining room, kitchen, servant’s quarters, and a trading office, all surrounding a large courtyard. Visitors can join guided tours every 30 minutes starting at 6:30 p.m., allowing them to explore these well-preserved spaces while enjoying traditional holiday treats like tamales and breaking a piñata.
The evening is further illuminated by luminarias, setting a festive atmosphere that harks back to an era long past yet vibrantly remembered. Admission is $5 for adults, and children 12 years and under can enter free, making it a family-friendly event that offers a meaningful way to celebrate the season and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the region.
