Sul Ross State University Seeks Technicians for Grassland Bird and Habitat Surveys

Sul Ross State University, located in Alpine, Texas, has announced openings for two temporary positions titled “Technician – Wintering Grassland Bird and Habitat Surveys” as part of the Center for Big Bend Studies. The posting aims to support ongoing research focused on the decline of grassland birds within the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem, a region crucial for biodiversity and environmental services like climate regulation and erosion control.

This role is ideal for individuals with a keen interest in ornithology and vegetation, as it involves identifying and counting grassland birds and measuring vegetation under established protocols. The technicians will work closely with graduate students and other surveyors, conducting surveys that typically start before sunrise and last about 2-3 hours, followed by immediate vegetation assessments.

Candidates are expected to have experience in identifying birds and vegetation, with a preference given to those familiar with the flora and fauna of the Trans-Pecos or the Chihuahuan Desert. A Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management or a related field is preferred, alongside experience in driving 4-wheel-drive trucks and working with private landowners on private property.

The positions offer $18 per hour with variable hours ranging from 20 to 40 per week, and housing may be provided. The appointment is set to begin on December 9, 2024, and will conclude in the first or second week of February 2025.

Interested applicants are required to submit a resume, a letter of intent, and transcripts, with the option to include up to three letters of recommendation and additional transcripts.
