Yesterday was a remarkable day for the Principles of Law and Public Safety students from Alpine High School (AHS), who had the unique opportunity to step inside the real world of law enforcement during a guided tour of the Alpine Police Department and Brewster County Jail. Led by Chief Darrell Lasoya, this educational excursion provided students with an in-depth look at the inner workings of local law enforcement and the critical technologies that support their operations.
The tour began at the Alpine Police Department, where students were introduced to the day-to-day responsibilities of the police officers. They explored the various technologies and equipment that assist officers in their duties, from advanced communication devices to the latest in crime-solving software. This firsthand exposure allowed students to connect their classroom studies to real-life applications, deepening their understanding of the law enforcement field.
The journey continued at the Brewster County Jail, where students observed how the facility operates and the procedures that ensure the safety and security of both the staff and inmates. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the complexities of managing a county jail and the importance of procedural efficiency and human rights.
A highlight of the visit was an in-depth demonstration at the county dispatch center, where students learned about the advanced technologies used to coordinate law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services throughout the county. They saw how dispatchers manage multiple incoming reports and deploy the necessary resources, showcasing the critical role that communication plays in public safety.
This educational tour not only enhanced the students’ understanding of law enforcement but also sparked interest in potential careers in the field. By seeing these operations up close, students gained valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of a career in public safety.
