Border Patrol’s Role in Marfa Sector and Beyond: A Look Back at the 1960s

The U.S. Border Patrol Big Bend Sector recently reflected on the history of sign-cutting in the Marfa Sector during the 1960s, a transformative period for the agency as it grew into a professional law enforcement organization.

During this decade, the Border Patrol Academy moved from El Paso to Port Isabel, Texas, training officers at the new location until its eventual relocation to Glynco, Georgia. The Bracero Program also ended in 1963, shifting agricultural labor dynamics.

The Border Patrol played a significant role in civil rights, assisting U.S. Marshals during the enrollment of James Meredith at the University of Mississippi, and pioneered airline security, laying the groundwork for the Sky Marshal program.
