Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers Conference Set for Fort Davis, Oct. 1-4

The Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers (RMOWP) Conference is scheduled to take place in Fort Davis, Texas, from Tuesday, October 1, to Friday, October 4, 2024. This annual event offers attendees a variety of activities, workshops, and field trips, highlighting the unique attractions of Fort Davis and its surroundings.

Fort Davis is known for its dark skies, located in the world’s largest International Dark Sky Reserve. The conference, timed with the new moon, will feature astrophotography sessions, including a Star Party at the historic Prude Ranch. A guided tour of the Davis Mountain Conservancy will explore the Sky Island ecosystem, home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including bears and cougars. Attendees can also enjoy a ranger-led walk at Davis Mountain State Park, known for its scenic views, hiking trails, and birdwatching opportunities.

The Chihuahua Desert Research Institute (CDRI) is another highlight, offering hiking trails, botanical gardens, and a unique riparian canyon. The conference includes a walking tour of CDRI, culminating in a luncheon near the bird blind.

Additional activities are available for attendees, such as exploring the historic town of Fort Davis, taking the scenic Davis Mountain Loop drive, visiting the McDonald Observatory, and touring the Chateau Wright winery. Fort Davis is also within a three-hour drive of Big Bend National Park and other notable sites.

The conference schedule includes various workshops and field trips:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1: Board of Directors Meeting, opening reception, and presentation of contest submissions.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: Field trip to Davis Mountain State Park, astrophotography workshop, and Sky Party at Prude Ranch.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3: Tours of Davis Mountain Conservancy and Fort Davis National Monument, photography critiques, and time-lapse photography workshop.
  • Friday, Oct. 4: Sunrise photo shoot, visit to Chihuahua Desert Research Institute, and banquet with awards ceremony.
