The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce’s newly launched website, designed to be a central hub for promoting local businesses and attracting tourists, is quickly becoming a significant liability due to its incomplete and outdated content. In particular, the community calendar—a vital tool for both residents and visitors—stands out for its glaring omissions and lack of current information.
Upon visiting the website’s community calendar, users are met with a list of past events, with little to no information on upcoming activities. For a town that relies heavily on tourism, the absence of a functional and up-to-date calendar is a missed opportunity to engage visitors and support local businesses. Events are a key draw for tourists, and a well-maintained calendar can significantly enhance the town’s appeal. Instead, the current calendar leaves users in the dark, providing no incentive for potential visitors to plan their trips around local happenings.
The issues with the calendar are emblematic of broader problems with the website. The “Restaurants / Bars” section, for example, is incomplete and disorganized, listing only a handful of dining options, many of which lack essential details like addresses, hours of operation, and links to websites. These shortcomings give the impression that Fort Davis has little to offer in terms of dining, potentially deterring tourists who rely on online resources to plan their visits. In reality, Fort Davis has over a dozen dining options that we list in the Big Bend Times Fort Davis Restaurant Guide.
Additionally, the website suffers from poor search engine optimization (SEO), leading to low visibility on search engines. Basic SEO practices, such as updating page titles and descriptions, have been neglected, further reducing the site’s effectiveness as a promotional tool for the town.
The lack of attention to detail and professionalism in the website’s design and content raises concerns about the use of the hotel occupancy tax (HOT) funds allocated to the Chamber. Despite having access to over $100,000 in HOT funds, the Chamber’s website fails to deliver the quality and completeness expected from such an investment. The site’s current state not only reflects poorly on the Chamber but also has broader implications for the local economy.
For Fort Davis, which relies heavily on tourism, the consequences of an inadequate official website are far-reaching. A poorly maintained online presence can lead to decreased visitor numbers, directly impacting the local tax base and property values. Local businesses, from restaurants to shops and hotels, depend on a robust and informative digital presence to attract customers and support economic growth.
The Chamber’s website, as it stands, is not fulfilling its role as a central resource for Fort Davis. It is imperative that the Chamber take swift action to update and improve the site, ensuring that it meets the needs of both visitors and locals by providing comprehensive, accurate, and timely information. Without these improvements, the website will continue to be a liability, rather than an asset, to the town’s economic and community well-being.
