Sul Ross State University’s Omicron Phi chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honors Society, has been honored with the Best Chapter Award for the 2023-2024 academic year. This prestigious award recognizes local chapters that demonstrate exceptional activity and engagement within their institutions and communities, reflecting the society’s mission to foster scholarship and intellectual interest in political science.

According to Tanya B. Schwarz, PhD, Executive Director of Pi Sigma Alpha, the award includes a $500 cash prize for the chapter and an additional $200 for the chapter advisor in recognition of their service. The winners will also be announced across various digital platforms and featured in the American Political Science Association’s magazine, Political Science Today.

“Dr. Jessica Velasco serves as faculty advisor to the chapter and should be recognized for her extraordinary leadership and dedication to the students who are members,” said Schwarz.

Dr. Velasco, an assistant professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Sul Ross State University, has been instrumental in guiding the chapter. In addition to her role with Omicron Phi, she serves as the advisor to the Pre-Law Association, College Republicans, and Young Democrats on campus, as well as the Faculty Athletics Representative. Dr. Velasco holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Texas A&M University and earned her Doctor of Public Administration from Valdosta State University in Georgia.

The Omicron Phi chapter at Sul Ross State University was established in 1986 and has since inducted over 281 students into the honor society. Distinguished political science students are invited to join Pi Sigma Alpha, and upon induction, members receive a certificate of membership, a lapel pin, and an honor cord to wear at graduation. Membership also offers various other benefits and requires a $40 fee.
