Costco Plans Largest Texas Store in Midland, Set to Serve Big Bend and Transpecos Region

Costco has announced plans to build the largest store in Texas, a 174,000-square-foot facility in west Midland that will serve not only the city but also the wider Big Bend and Transpecos region. The $50 million project is expected to create 100 full-time equivalent jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

For residents of the Big Bend and Transpecos areas, where large retail options are limited, the new Costco will offer a much-needed shopping destination closer to home. Currently, many in the region travel to cities like El Paso or Midland for similar retail experiences.

Construction is set to begin by June 1, 2025, with an expected completion date of August 31, 2026. The Midland Development Corporation (MDC) has agreed to reimburse Costco up to $6.5 million for infrastructure and site improvements related to the development. Reimbursements will be made in three phases:

  • $2,167,544.67 upon the completion of construction.
  • $2,167,544.67 when Costco certifies the creation of 100 new full-time jobs in Midland and maintains those jobs for one year.
  • $2,167,544.67 after the 100 full-time jobs have been maintained for two years.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong, who signed the contract supporting the Costco project, highlighted the city’s ongoing commitment to fostering economic growth. The new Costco is expected to make a substantial impact, offering a significant retail option for residents of Midland and the broader Big Bend and Transpecos region.

This development marks a key milestone for the area, providing expanded shopping opportunities and contributing to the economic future of the region.
