The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute (CDRI) invites the community to “A Celebration of Grasses!” on Saturday, September 7, starting at 9:30 a.m. This event marks the unveiling of the newly completed Native Grasses Exhibit, with an extended tour to showcase the latest additions to the Pollinator Garden. Admission is free, but reservations are required.
The Native Grasses Exhibit, which began in February 2023, features 26 of the 50 species of grasses found in the immediate area. This project, taking a year and a half to complete, includes individually identified and labeled sections for each grass species and large interpretive panels that describe the grasses in the garden exhibit.
Additionally, the exhibit includes:
- A permanent 4 ft. x 6 ft. display inside the Powell Visitor Center, highlighting the importance of grasslands.
- A 36-page booklet describing each of the 26 species of grasses in the exhibit.
- Specially designed bandanas featuring each grass species, available for purchase in the Gift Shop.
The project was a collaborative effort led by CDRI’s Board President, Jim Martinez, who designed the exhibit. Jim Fissel created the artwork for all the signs, panels, and bandanas. Faith Hille, Head Gardener, directed volunteers in constructing the exhibit and planting and growing the grasses. Kipp Harlow, Site Manager, crafted the steel forms supporting the interpretive panels and oversaw the installation of all signs. Special thanks go to project consultant Dr. Mike Powell, CDRI’s co-founder.
Join CDRI on Saturday, September 7, to celebrate this significant project. To RSVP, email events@cdri.org or call 432-364-2499.
