El Paso Family Alleges Retaliation by Police After Filing Lawsuit Over Arrest

An El Paso family, the Holguins, claims they are being targeted by the El Paso Police Department following a lawsuit they filed over an alleged illegal arrest in 2022. This case has garnered attention due to its implications for police conduct and accountability, and its proximity to the Big Bend Region makes it particularly relevant to our readers.

The trouble began when Adzari Holguin, then a high school senior, was asked by a relative to film the police during a response to a domestic dispute. According to the Holguins, police became aggressive upon noticing Adzari was recording. Her father, Eddie Holguin, intervened to escort his daughter home. The family alleges that this led to an illegal raid on their residence and the arrest of both Eddie and Adzari.

Following the raid, the Holguins filed a lawsuit alleging violations of their civil rights. They now claim that the police are deliberately targeting their family as a form of retaliation.

The video embedded below, from a recent Police Accountability Report episode, examines the evidence and discusses what this case reveals about police conduct in America. The report suggests that, in many places, police operate with significant impunity and may engage in retaliatory behavior.

The Holguins allege that after they filed the lawsuit, the El Paso Police Department began a prolonged investigation into their family, which they believe constitutes harassment.

In one incident, Adzari documented the police surveilling her driveway. When she confronted them, they refused to answer her questions. Later, the police pulled over Eddie and Adzari, claiming the insurance and registration on his work van had expired. Despite Eddie’s protests, the police arrested him, stating he had a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—a charge Eddie denies.

Eddie’s injuries from previous police encounters were exacerbated during the arrest, leaving him unable to work and increasing his distrust of the police. He described the emotional and financial toll this ongoing harassment has taken on his family.

The Holguins believe the recent actions of the El Paso Police Department are retaliatory. “I believe this has to do with the lawsuit,” Eddie Holguin said. “That’s what I believe… They don’t have no evidence against me. There’s nothing.”

Adzari echoed these sentiments, expressing anger and frustration towards the police. “How dare you live with yourself… knowing that you do what you do to us on a daily basis,” she said.

This case underscores the challenges many Americans face in holding police accountable and the potential for abuse of power within the system. The Police Accountability Report continues to investigate and bring these stories to light, advocating for systemic change and greater transparency in law enforcement practices.

For residents in the Big Bend Region, this story serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and advocacy in ensuring justice and accountability in our communities.

  1. Really sad that the ElPaso police department hasn’t gotten the word that they can do who they want’

    1. its mostly the new police coming on board they think the badge gives them the right to do anything

  2. First, Mr. Holguin says there’s “nothing”, then says his “previous injuries” with
encounters with the Police were exascerbated, so what were the previous encounters for?

    1. The previous encounters were the cops continuing to arrest him and harass them. I try to keep an honest perspective as there are plenty of people claiming harassment that it’s BS, But this family has been RELENTLESSLY Harrassed. You can find the story on YouTube and it’s CRAZY. A group of cops standing in their drive way making sure they were seen first. Then they had two detectives show up and fabricated charges and sent out a warrant of the guy shooting someone with a BB Gun. The Judge who signed off on this needs to be euthanized as well for aiding and abetting this horrible Corruption
