The Alpine Police Department recently welcomed Jeff Vajdos as their newest Reserve Officer. Vajdos, who retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety in 2022 after a distinguished career, brings decades of experience to the role.
“Officer Vajdos joins Alpine Police Department after retiring from the Texas Department of Public Safety where he served as a Texas Ranger from 2006-2022, Company E. Vajdos began his DPS career in 1996,” the department announced on their Facebook page.
The community has responded with enthusiasm and support. Comments on the announcement included sentiments such as, “You’re getting a good guy right there,” and “Congratulations Jeff, thankful for your willingness to protect and serve your community.”
However, Vajdos’ career is not without controversy. During his tenure as a Texas Ranger, he was involved in the investigation of the high-profile murder of Sophia Sullivan in Fort Davis in 2018. The investigation was heavily criticized for numerous missteps, including the failure to search the suspect’s trailer and the mishandling of crucial evidence.
The Texas Observer reported on the investigation’s shortcomings, quoting District Attorney Sandy Wilson: “Do you think they even bothered to get 24 hours before? That’s what I had to work with.” Vajdos admitted in court that he did not review bodycam footage of the crime scene despite repeated requests from the prosecution. These errors contributed to a mistrial, and the case remains unresolved.
Despite the controversy, community members have voiced their confidence in Vajdos’ abilities and character. Comments such as “Great man! You hired a good one,” and “Congratulations and thank you for your service!” reflect a belief in his capability to serve and protect, despite past criticisms.
Vajdos’ appointment is seen as a positive addition to the Alpine Police Department, bringing valuable experience and a strong commitment to the community. The support from residents highlights their trust in his experience and dedication.
As he begins his new role, Vajdos has an opportunity to continue his service and contribute positively to the safety and well-being of Alpine. The community’s warm welcome underscores their trust in his ability to protect and serve effectively.
