Marathon’s French Grocer Receives Overwhelming Community Support and $87K+ in Contributions Amid Relocation Efforts

The French Grocer, a cornerstone of the Marathon community, has recently embarked on a significant fundraising campaign to address an urgent relocation need. Amidst a critical lease dispute and facing the expiration of its five-year lease in November, the beloved local grocery store is seeking financial support to secure a new location and continue serving its unique blend of products and services to the Marathon area.

Organized by French Grocer Proprietor Samuel Stavinoha, the fundraiser has rallied the community and attracted notable support from both individuals and local businesses, highlighting the deep-rooted connection between the grocer and the residents of Marathon and beyond. As of now, the campaign has successfully raised $87,948 towards its $125,042 goal, a testament to the community’s commitment to preserving this vital establishment.

“The outpouring of support has been nothing short of miraculous,” said Stavinoha, emphasizing the crucial role of the grocery store in the community. The French Grocer is recognized for its eclectic offerings, ranging from food supplies to a music venue, making it an indispensable part of the local fabric, especially as the only location accepting food stamps within a 30-mile radius.

Among the local businesses contributing to the cause, The Gage Hotel stands out for its significant involvement and encouragement to increase the fundraising target. “We are stronger together,” remarked a spokesperson from The Gage Hotel, reflecting the collective spirit driving the campaign.

Prominent contributions have also come from individuals deeply connected to the store’s mission and impact. Deborah Willbanks and Katie and John Ray each donated $1,000, sharing personal messages of support and highlighting the store’s integral role in their lives and the broader community. “Wow Sam. Sorry this is happening. Good luck,” Willbanks expressed, encapsulating the sentiment of many who have come forward to assist.

Travis & Lydia and Mary Beth-Cole Schaefer-Altom contributed $500 each, further demonstrating the community’s readiness to support the grocer through this challenging transition. Schaefer-Altom remarked on the importance of the French Grocer beyond its function as a mere retail space, underscoring its status as a community gathering place and a vital asset to the region.

As the French Grocer navigates this pivotal moment, the support from Marathon and beyond underscores the deep connections forged between local businesses and their communities. The campaign not only aims to secure a new home for the French Grocer but also to preserve a legacy of service and community engagement that has defined the establishment for over a century.

With the deadline looming, the drive continues to gather momentum, fueled by the community’s resolve to keep this cherished establishment thriving. Stavinoha and the French Grocer team remain optimistic, buoyed by the unprecedented support and looking forward to embarking on a new chapter in a new location, with the same commitment to service that has always characterized the French Grocer.
