The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) is offering a unique internship opportunity at the Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area, located at 48515 S Hwy 118, Alpine, TX 79830. Under the guidance of the Area Manager and Assistant Area Managers, the selected intern will play a crucial role in the implementation of ecosystem management strategies focused on wildlife and habitat management, restoration, and enhancement within the Trans-Pecos Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).
This position is designed for individuals currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in an accredited college or university or those who have recently graduated within the last six months. A minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours and a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale are required for consideration. While no prior experience is necessary, a valid State driver’s license is mandatory.
Preferred candidates will be those actively pursuing degrees in Wildlife Science or closely related fields, possessing experience with equipment operation and maintenance, monitoring and survey equipment, and personal computers and applications. The internship aims to impart practical knowledge and skills in various aspects, including ecosystem management, wildlife/habitat management techniques, baseline inventory techniques, wildlife population and habitat monitoring, and management area operations, with a specific focus on desert ecosystems.
Duties will range from assisting in conducting wildlife and vegetation inventories, aiding in research activities, collecting GPS data for GIS development, to hands-on involvement in habitat enhancements and facility maintenance. This internship offers an exceptional learning experience in understanding the issues affecting the wildlife profession, management strategies, and operations specific to the Texas Trans-Pecos region.
Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of native and non-native wildlife, vegetation, habitats, and land use practices in the region. Skills in effective communication, computer applications, safe operation of heavy equipment, and data analysis are highly valued. The ability to work independently or as part of a team, perform manual labor, and adhere to TPWD’s safety program is essential.
