The Big Bend Open Road Race, acclaimed as “the most challenging open road race in the world,” is set to electrify the small West Texas communities of Fort Stockton and Sanderson this April. This annual spectacle draws hundreds of speed enthusiasts from across the United States and Europe, eager to witness or participate in high-octane racing across the picturesque but demanding terrain of West Texas.
Scheduled from April 24th to 27th, 2024, the event kicks off in Sanderson with a series of pre-race activities including registration, technical inspections, rookie school, practice runs, and qualifying sessions. These preliminary events will take place on Wednesday, April 19, and Thursday, April 20, setting the stage for the main event.
The excitement shifts to Fort Stockton on Friday, April 26, with a vibrant Car Show at Rooney Park from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., where attendees can meet the drivers and marvel at the racing machines up close. The festivities continue with a Parade at 5:30 p.m., offering a glimpse of the competition to come.
The race itself, a heart-pounding dash covering 118 miles of U.S. Highway 285 from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back, begins bright and early on Saturday, April 27. Competitors will tackle a course that boasts 59 turns and significant elevation changes, pushing their vehicles to the limit. The race features divisions for varying speeds, from the 85 mph Street Rod Division up to the no-holds-barred Unlimited Division, where speeds soar above 200 mph.
Following the adrenaline-fueled race, the Annual After Race Party in the Park will take place in Rooney Park from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m., offering music, food, drinks, and boundless fun. It’s a perfect opportunity for fans to interact with racers, take photos, and gather autographs.
The Big Bend Open Road Race not only tests the skill and courage of its participants but also significantly benefits the local communities, bringing together car enthusiasts and fostering a spirit of camaraderie.
