In a thrilling home opener on a chilly Saturday night, the Sul Ross State softball team showcased resilience and strategic prowess to secure a 9-7 win over the Austin College Kangaroos at the Lobo Softball Field. Despite falling behind early, the Lobos mounted an impressive comeback to clinch their first victory of the season.
The game began under challenging conditions as temperatures dipped into the mid-30s, setting the stage for what would become a memorable contest. Austin College quickly took the lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the second to go up 3-0. However, the Lobos’ fighting spirit was ignited in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on an Austin College error to score two runs and narrow the gap.
The Kangaroos extended their lead to 6-2 in the third inning, but the momentum began to shift as Sul Ross State responded with force. Adriana Hernandez sparked the rally with a solo home run, followed by a clutch pinch-hit two RBI double from Elizabeth Clemente, bringing the Lobos within one. The comeback continued in the fourth inning when Lily Wiser hit a two-run homer, propelling Sul Ross State into the lead for the first time. Samantha Chavez cemented the victory with a two RBI single in the fifth, bringing the final score to 9-7.
Despite the cold conditions that led to the cancellation of the scheduled doubleheader, the Lobos displayed remarkable tenacity and teamwork. Key performances included Chavez’s two singles and two RBI, Wiser’s crucial home run, and Jaelyn Zuniga’s effective pitching, which earned her the win after five innings of work.
With this victory, Sul Ross State improves their season record to 1-4, while Austin College moves to 2-1. The teams are set to face off again in a single game on Sunday, February 18, at 10 a.m. CST, offering the Lobos an opportunity to build on their momentum and the Kangaroos a chance for redemption. Fans can look forward to another exciting matchup as both teams vie for supremacy on the diamond.
