Engaging the Cosmos: McDonald Observatory Announces Spring Break 2024 Schedule

The McDonald Observatory is gearing up to offer a unique celestial experience for Spring Break 2024, inviting visitors to explore the wonders of the universe from its West Texas vantage point. From March 9-16, 2024, the Observatory will host an array of daytime and evening activities designed to cater to astronomy enthusiasts and casual stargazers alike.

During this special week, the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center will welcome guests from 12pm to 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday, featuring a modified schedule to accommodate as many visitors as possible. General Admission, priced at $3 per person, offers access to the Visitors Center as well as the summits of Mt. Locke and Mt. Fowlkes. Here, visitors can delve into the history of astronomy, the importance of preserving dark skies, and enjoy breathtaking views alongside educational exhibits.

Highlights of the Spring Break programming include Solar Viewing sessions, where participants can safely observe live views of the Sun, including potential sunspots and solar flares, for $5 per person. These sessions will run multiple times daily, weather permitting.

For those interested in a more in-depth experience, the Observatory offers Guided Tours of the 107-inch Harlan J. Smith Telescope. This 75-minute tour delves into the telescope’s history and operations, with ticket prices ranging from $5 to $10, including General Admission.

The crown jewel of the Spring Break offerings is the Star Party, the Observatory’s most popular program. It features a Constellation Tour and telescope views of various celestial objects. Scheduled for the evenings, the Star Party aims to provide an unforgettable stargazing experience, with tickets priced between $5 and $25.

Visitors are advised to monitor weather conditions and dress appropriately for outdoor activities, as the Observatory is located 450 miles west of Austin and experiences cold and/or windy conditions. Additionally, it’s important to note that the Observatory, including the Visitors Center, is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and there are no food service, cell service, or public WiFi available on-site.
