Explore the Chihuahuan Desert with the Inaugural Douglas H. Thompson Road Rally

The Douglas H. Thompson Road Rally, also known as the Chihuahua Run, is set to embark on its first journey through the picturesque landscapes of the Chihuahuan Desert from Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, to Sunday, March 3, 2024. This inaugural event promises participants an unforgettable adventure across some of Texas’ most breathtaking scenery, with no registration fees or donations required to participate.

The rally kicks off Thursday evening with a supper at Ranch House in Sanderson, offering attendees a chance to fuel up for the exciting journey ahead. The evening will also feature a meet and greet with Ben H. English at Ferguson Motors, setting the stage for camaraderie and shared anticipation among participants.

The adventure continues Friday morning with coffee and breakfast in Sanderson before the rally heads towards Big Bend National Park and Terlingua, where participants will have the opportunity to explore the natural beauty and unique culture of the area. Lunch in Terlingua and supper in Marathon are on the itinerary, ensuring that participants enjoy local flavors along their journey.

Saturday’s activities begin in Alpine with breakfast, followed by a return trip to Terlingua to drive along the scenic River Road FM 170 towards Presidio. The route then leads north to Marfa for lunch, with the day culminating in a drive through Fort Davis before returning to Alpine for supper. This leg of the trip offers a diverse view of the desert’s landscapes and the communities nestled within it.

The rally concludes on Sunday morning with a final meetup for breakfast at Judy’s Bread and Breakfast in Alpine, after which participants will go their separate ways, carrying with them memories of the shared adventure.

Participants are advised to book their accommodations early, with hotel options available in Sanderson, Marathon, and Alpine. Given the popularity of the Big Bend area, early booking is recommended to ensure availability.
