Fort Hancock’s IH 10 Safety Rest Area Project Set to Enhance Travel Experience with $41.5 Million Investment

Fort Hancock residents and travelers along Interstate 10 (I-10) can anticipate a significant upgrade to their journey with the IH 10 Safety Rest Area Project, slated to begin on August 1, 2024.

Spanning from 2 miles east of SPUR 148 to 4.8 miles east of the same point in Hudspeth County, this project represents a substantial investment of $41.5 million from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The initiative underscores TxDOT’s commitment to improving highway safety and enhancing traveler convenience.

Funded through public resources, the IH 10 Safety Rest Area Project will introduce modern amenities and innovative features to the rest area facilities. These include air-conditioned and heated restrooms, expanded parking areas for cars and commercial trucks, wireless Internet access, information areas highlighting local attractions, dedicated law enforcement office space, enhanced security measures with surveillance cameras and tornado shelters, walking trails, and play areas for children.

Visitors will be permitted to stay at the rest area for up to 24 hours under Texas Transportation Code 545.411, providing a much-needed respite for travelers.

Scheduled for completion by August 1, 2026, the IH 10 Safety Rest Area Project signifies Fort Hancock’s commitment to highway safety and the advancement of travel experiences along Interstate 10. Through initiatives like this, the Texas Department of Transportation continues to prioritize safety, efficiency, and connectivity for all Texans and visitors.
