This Saturday, February 3, the community of Alpine is invited to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Big Bend region during the Wildlife Day event, a partnership between the Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) and Visit Alpine. The event offers a unique opportunity to learn about and celebrate the diverse wildlife of the area through a series of free activities scheduled throughout the day.
The morning begins with two guided tours. A hike led by Dr. Justin French from BRI will explore Hancock Hill, focusing on Big Game species. While reservations for the hike are full, interested parties can find information on future hikes online. Simultaneously, Dr. Maureen Frank will lead a bird tour at Kokernot Lodge and Park, where participants can learn about the over 80 bird species that visit Alpine during the winter.
The “Lunch & Learn” session at noon in the Holland Hotel lobby presents a chance to hear from BRI graduate students about their current wildlife research. Attendees are encouraged to bring a quick lunch from local establishments like Bread Garden Bakery, Picnic Basket, and Scoops, with Joe Crow Coffee providing beverages.
In the afternoon, downtown Alpine becomes a hub for wildlife-themed activities and shopping. Highlights include a special appearance by local artist Chris Ruggia at Front Street Books and an art and conservation talk by Dr. Patricia Harveson at Gallery on the Square. Javelinas on Holland will feature live music and wildlife-themed merchandise, and visitors can meet Carl the Camel at Wassermann’s.
The day concludes at the Granada Theatre with a screening of the documentary “Deep in the Heart,” narrated by Matthew McConaughey, at 5:15 pm, followed by a Wildlife Panel Discussion with BRI experts at 7 pm.
