Valentine’s in Valentine: A Classic Texas Celebration with Jimmie Vaughan as 2024 Headliner

Nestled in Jeff Davis County, Texas, the small yet vibrant town of Valentine, with an estimated population of 100-200 residents, is preparing for its 12th annual “Valentine’s in Valentine” celebration. This event, deeply rooted in the town’s history and charm, is a testament to the community’s enduring spirit.

Valentine’s story dates back to 1882, when a railroad crew, having completed laying tracks, needed to establish a water and fuel depot on February 14th. In a nod to this historic coincidence, they named the depot Valentine. Today, the town is uniquely positioned, roughly equidistant at about 1000 miles from both Los Angeles and New Orleans. Locally, it lies halfway between the artistic hub of Marfa and the town of Van Horn. This position places Valentine amidst significant cultural and natural landmarks, including the Chinati Foundation established by Donald Judd, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space company, and both National Parks in Texas.

The centerpiece of the “Valentine’s in Valentine” celebration is the Old Mercantile Building. Originally built in 1907 as Johnson’s Grocery, this building functioned as a general store for six decades, selling an array of goods from food to blacksmithing materials. After lying abandoned for about 50 years, a West Texas enthusiast purchased and restored it in 2012, entrusting local contractor Scott Williams of Alpine, TX, with its renovation. Williams, an expert in adobe construction, revitalized the building, preserving its historical charm and mystique, making it an ideal venue for the annual celebration.

The 2024 edition of “Valentine’s in Valentine” is set to feature Jimmie Vaughan, a four-time Grammy-winning blues rock guitarist and singer. Vaughan, renowned for his musical prowess and connections to blues legends, will headline the event, bringing a piece of Texas’s rich musical heritage to Valentine.

Alongside Vaughan, the festival will host The Pulpit Ramblers, The Pecos River Band, Primo y Beebe, and a special appearance by Sheverb, promising a diverse and vibrant musical lineup. The event is more than just a concert; it’s a gathering that captures the essence of West Texas – its resilience, its culture, and its warmth.

Come rain or shine, “Valentine in Valentine” stands as a beacon of West Texas spirit. Its blend of music, local culture, and small-town ambiance continues to draw visitors from near and far, offering a truly unique experience.
