Big Bend National Park, known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant natural beauty, is once again hosting its prestigious Artist in Residence Program. The program, supported by the Big Bend Natural History Association, is inviting artists from diverse mediums to apply for residencies during the summer months.
The Artist in Residence Program is scheduled for 2–4-week sessions throughout July, August, and September 2024. Applications are currently open until March 1, 2024, offering a unique opportunity for both emerging and professional artists over 18 years old. The program is inclusive of various art forms including painting, sculpting, photography, music, writing, and performance.
Drawing inspiration from the historic connection between art and national parks, this program is part of a wider network of 50 art residencies across the United States. The initiative aims to foster a creative exploration of Big Bend’s cultural, historical, and natural resources. Artists will have the chance to immerse themselves in the park’s environment and share their interpretations with the public.
Residents will be accommodated in private park housing units in Panther Junction, offering stunning desert views and proximity to the Chisos Mountains. This remote location in West Texas is not only a serene retreat but also a prime spot for stargazing, having been recognized as an International Dark Sky Park.
The program requires artists to engage in public outreach, conducting two programs a week. These interactions can range from nature journaling walks to evening presentations, enriching the visitor experience with artistic insights. While most time is dedicated to personal art practice, these outreach activities are integral to connecting park visitors with the park’s essence through an artistic lens.
Applicants should submit their statement of intent, public outreach proposal, artist resume, and work samples to the Big Bend National Park volunteer coordinator at jessie_knirsch@nps.gov. The program does not cover all expenses, and artists are responsible for their meals, transportation, and personal art supplies. Notably, physical artwork is not collected, but high-quality digital images of work produced during the residency are requested for educational and promotional purposes.
This initiative not only offers artists a chance to develop their craft in a unique setting but also enhances the park’s mission to bridge nature and culture. As Big Bend National Park continues to inspire and preserve its natural beauty, the Artist in Residence Program opens doors for creative minds to explore, interpret, and share their vision with a broader audience.
