Fort Davis, Texas, a town that thrives on tourism, is currently grappling with a significant issue that stems from the apparent mismanagement of substantial hotel occupancy tax (HOT) funds by its Chamber of Commerce. Despite receiving over $100,000 in HOT funds, as reported last, the Chamber’s failure to develop a functional and accurate online presence for the town is adversely affecting its local businesses and tourism appeal.
The primary concern revolves around the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce’s website, FortDavis.com. This platform, which should serve as a welcoming and informative online gateway to the town, is instead a source of frustration and confusion. It showcases a limited and sometimes misleading selection of businesses, including establishments like Hotel Paisano in Marfa and Alta Marfa winery, which are not located in Fort Davis. This misrepresentation not only misleads potential visitors but also undervalues and omits many of the town’s genuine local businesses.
The website’s state is particularly disconcerting given the significant amount of HOT funds at the Chamber’s disposal. These funds, intended to promote tourism and business, seem to have been poorly utilized, as evidenced by the website’s lackluster design, outdated information, and numerous broken links. The current digital representation of Fort Davis is far from the professional and inviting image required to attract tourists in today’s digital age.
This ongoing issue has tangible negative impacts on the community. According to a 2022 Texas A&M study, the internet is a vital source for tourists planning their visits to the Big Bend region, indicating that Fort Davis is at a continual disadvantage due to its inadequate online representation. The Chamber’s inability to effectively leverage its resources, including the HOT funds, directly hampers the town’s economic growth and prosperity.
The situation has prompted community action, with an offer from the publisher of Big Bend Times, a web development expert, to rebuild the Chamber’s website for free. However, without a director at the helm of the Chamber following Reagan Stone’s departure, and with no clear action plan in place, this generous offer remains unutilized.
The Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce’s handling of over $100,000 in HOT funds and its neglect in providing a robust online presence for the town is a matter of grave concern. It calls for immediate and decisive action to revitalize the town’s digital facade, not only to benefit its current residents and businesses but also to secure its future as a key tourist destination in Texas.
