In an intensely fought 93rd edition of the Battle of I-20 rivalry, the Sul Ross State University Lobos displayed commendable tenacity and skill, despite a 37-23 defeat to the McMurry University War Hawks at Wilford Moore Stadium on Saturday.
The Lobos initiated the game with determination, as Carlos Arreola put them in the lead with an impressive field goal following a nine-play, 69-yard drive. This early momentum set the tone for Sul Ross State’s resilient performance throughout the match.
Despite McMurry’s quick response with a touchdown by Joel Hess, the Lobos continued to fight valiantly. Sul Ross State’s scoring efforts included another field goal by Arreola and two crucial touchdowns in the second half. One of these was a notable 10-yard pass from Cyrin Myles to Vicente Luevano, demonstrating the team’s offensive capabilities.
Quarterback Cyrin Myles was a standout for the Lobos, completing 23 of 36 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns, illustrating his leadership and skill on the field. Andrew Martinez also contributed significantly, completing 9 of 15 passes for 144 yards.
The Lobos’ defense put up a formidable front with seven tackles for loss, three sacks, and an interception, showcasing their strategic defensive play. This defensive effort was highlighted by the team’s ability to limit McMurry’s advances at crucial moments in the game.
