Sul Ross State University (SRSU) has announced the appointment of Kathy Stein, Ed.D, as the new Assistant Dean of Student Success, a role designed to strengthen the institution’s commitment to its undergraduates’ academic achievements.
Dr. Stein, who previously served as the director of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) at SRSU, will be at the helm of the university’s efforts to bolster student retention and success. In her new capacity, she will oversee the creation and enforcement of policies and procedures related to academic advising and tutoring services at the Alpine campus. She will also ensure the implementation of core policies aimed at enhancing the educational outcomes of SRSU students.
The newly created position highlights the university’s proactive strategy in fostering an environment conducive to student growth and achievement. With a focus on institution-wide initiatives, Dr. Stein’s oversight will extend to a variety of retention activities and services that underpin undergraduate success.
Dr. Stein’s experience as a first-generation college student herself informs her approach to academic leadership. Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts in Professional Writing and Rhetoric from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), as well as certification as a Developmental Education Specialist from the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University. Dr. Stein also holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from UTEP.
Throughout her career, Dr. Stein has been committed to student support, particularly in developmental education, and has held teaching positions at multiple institutions, including UTEP, El Paso Community College, Odessa College, and the University of Texas Permian Basin.
Executive Vice President and Provost Bernie Canteñs expressed confidence in Dr. Stein’s ability to transform the academic experiences of SRSU students, citing her extensive research on developmental education students and their views on academic success.
Dr. Stein’s appointment is a strategic move by SRSU to ensure that students not only embark on their higher education journey but also have the necessary support to navigate it successfully and ultimately celebrate their achievements at commencement.
