Amid the picturesque landscapes of Balmorhea State Park, construction crews are hard at work, hinting at the eagerly awaited return of lodging and camping facilities. The park remains open, but the revival of these amenities has become a source of anticipation and hope for visitors.

During a recent visit to Balmorhea State Park, the Big Bend Times team observed promising developments in the camping area. Flooring contractors were actively refinishing concrete floors, signaling that this section of the park is progressing towards completion. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has yet to announce an official reopening date for these facilities.
As for the lodge, uncertainties still surround its readiness to welcome guests. After closely monitoring the construction progress and conducting interviews with on-site flooring contractors, the Big Bend Times speculates that campers may need to wait until at least 2024 before they can fully embrace the park’s accommodations. The reopening of the lodge could potentially take place in 2025, although these timelines remain speculative and await confirmation from TPWD.
Balmorhea State Park initiated a comprehensive renovation in 2019, and its journey has encountered its fair share of challenges. While not explicitly mentioned, the pandemic-induced hurdles, including material delivery delays and staffing issues, have inevitably played a role in shaping the construction timeline.
It’s important to note that despite the ongoing renovations, Balmorhea State Park remains accessible to the public. The park’s renowned pool reopened in mid-2021, offering visitors the chance to bask in its spring-fed waters and revel in the beauty of this natural oasis.
The ongoing construction projects at Balmorhea State Park primarily focus on the revitalization of lodging and camping amenities. This includes the replacement of septic systems, the transformation of the pool fence into one made of wrought iron and stone, and the rebuilding of the CCC pergola by the diving board.
As the work continues, TPWD maintains its unwavering commitment to visitor safety. Given the presence of heavy machinery and construction equipment in the vicinity, visitors are advised to exercise caution.
While the reopening of lodging and camping facilities at Balmorhea State Park remains eagerly anticipated, the park’s enduring natural beauty and recreational opportunities continue to draw visitors.
