Marfa Junior High Students Partner with Big Bend Conservation Alliance to Launch Innovative Flex Farm

In an exciting educational endeavor, Marfa Independent School District’s junior high students have teamed up with the Big Bend Conservation Alliance to establish their very own flex farm. Under the guidance of Ms. Hermosillo from the Alliance, the students are set to grow fresh food all year round using cutting-edge hydroponic farming techniques.

During the early stages, 7th graders took the initiative to transplant green leaf lettuce seedlings to the flex farm. Their dedication and hard work paid off as all 200 of their seeds successfully germinated.

The culmination of this educational and hands-on farming experience was when the students harvested the green leaf lettuce. They not only grew it but also packaged it securely for the Marfa ISD cafeteria. The entire school reaped the benefits of the students’ efforts, enjoying a delicious salad freshly prepared by the Robinson Cafeteria staff using the lettuce grown on the flex farm.

The implementation of the flex farm stands as a testament to the potential of modern agricultural technology. With the support of the Big Bend Conservation Alliance, Ms. Hermosillo, and Ms. Lora Loya, Marfa ISD students have been introduced to the wonders and efficiencies of hydroponic farming. The project has illuminated the benefits and components of a flex farm, showcasing it as a transformative agricultural tool.

The flex farm is set to be a staple in the school’s agricultural initiatives, providing students with invaluable hands-on experiences and fresh produce for years to come.
