This Weekend: Last Chance of 2023 for Free Access to 30K Acre Davis Mountains Preserve

Calling all outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers! Get ready for the grand finale of the 2023 Open Weekend Events at the Davis Mountains Preserve. This eagerly awaited event, the final one of the year, guarantees an unforgettable experience amidst the natural splendor of Texas.

Nestled against the stunning backdrop of the Davis Mountains, the Davis Mountains Preserve is typically reserved for research and conservation efforts. However, on select weekends throughout the year, it throws open its gates to the public, offering a unique chance to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature.

In an exciting update for 2023, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has announced that reservations are no longer mandatory for attending Open Events at the preserve, except for special occasions. This change simplifies the process for nature enthusiasts eager to explore this pristine wilderness.

Mark your calendars! The upcoming and final Open Weekend Event is set to run from October 20th to October 22nd, 2023. During this event, you can partake in camping, hiking, biking, equestrian activities, picnicking, photography, bird-watching, and much more. The preserve opens its gates at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and welcomes visitors until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Before you embark on your adventure, please familiarize yourself with the following guidelines for Open Event attendees:

  1. You’ll need a high-clearance, street-legal vehicle to venture beyond the McIvor Conservation Center.
  2. Campfires are strictly prohibited on the preserve.
  3. Firearms are not permitted on the premises.
  4. Any individual under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  5. With the exception of licensed service animals, no pets are allowed on the preserve.

Furthermore, we encourage responsible environmental stewardship by packing in and packing out all waste. Public restrooms are available at the McIvor Conservation Center.

To ensure a comfortable and safe experience, please come prepared with ample food and water, rain gear, hiking boots, sunscreen, and hats, as the preserve’s weather can be unpredictable.

Depending on your fitness level, this trail typically takes 4-6 hours to complete, excluding drive time to the trailhead. Keep in mind that on Open Days, the preserve gates close promptly at 5:00 p.m., so plan your visit accordingly.
