Sul Ross State University’s RGRC Awarded Grant to Monitor Rio Grande River’s Spring Contributions

The Rio Grande Research Center (RGRC) at Sul Ross State University recently garnered a grant from the National Parks Foundation. The grant, amounting to $32,855, is designated to monitor spring contributions and flow along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. This research comes at a pivotal time, with concerns about climate change and human activity upstream posing potential threats to the river’s ecosystem.

Dr. Kevin Urbanczyk, a seasoned hydrologist and the director of the RGRC, sheds light on the upcoming study. He emphasized the aim to quantify the water influx from numerous springs within the national park and the Wild and Scenic River downstream. “The springs originate from aquifers, making their appearance downstream of Mariscal Mountain. Notable among them are the hot springs in the park. However, a significant portion of the water input is in the Lower Canyons, spanning from La Linda to a river access south of Dryden,” Dr. Urbanczyk stated.

The extensive fieldwork will primarily occur in the canyons. Highlighting the methodology, Dr. Urbanczyk mentioned two eight-day canoe expeditions scheduled for next spring. These trips aim to meticulously measure water flow and quality. Assisting in this crucial endeavor will be three students from the university.

However, the journey ahead is not devoid of challenges. Dr. Urbanczyk noted two primary concerns that might jeopardize the Lower Canyons. First, the lack of comprehensive data regarding the recharge of the binational aquifer, upon which the springs heavily rely. Secondly, low flow rates in the river, which could lead to escalated sediment levels, undesirable vegetation growth, and consequent channel narrowing. Such changes can severely affect aquatic habitat quality.

With a committed team and the backing of the National Parks Foundation, the RGRC anticipates wrapping up field operations by the close of Spring 2024.
