The Sul Ross State University Department of Visual and Performing Arts has debuted “Oleanna” to a chorus of rave reviews. This compelling play, penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet, opened on Friday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m. and is making waves for its unflinching exploration of timely and contentious issues, including sexual harassment, power dynamics, privilege, gender dynamics, and political correctness on a college campus.

Directed by Marjie Scott, the production boasts scenic and lighting design by Ross Fleming and costume design by Carolyn Barrientes. The play showcases the exceptional talents of students Justin Hinton and Olivia Pertuso, delivering an engaging and thought-provoking experience for theater enthusiasts.
“Oleanna” delves into the turbulent encounter between a female undergraduate student, Carol, and her male university professor, John, during a meeting to discuss her failing grade. What begins as a seemingly routine conversation escalates into a series of accusations that threaten John’s career, prompting the audience to question who holds the moral high ground.
Originally premiering on Broadway in 1992, with acclaimed performances by William H. Macy and Rebecca Pidgeon, “Oleanna” received widespread acclaim for its poignant exploration of sexual harassment and power dynamics. The New York Times, in its review, noted how the play’s themes remained highly relevant even years after its initial debut.
Director and Associate Professor of Communication and Theatre, Marjie Scott, emphasized the play’s timeliness, stating, “This play feels very timely. The issues of power dynamics, sexual harassment, and censorship are still so relevant, especially on college campuses. What I love about this play is that both characters are culpable. John and Carol each manipulate and abuse power. Even after working on this play for months, I find myself looking at both sides and feeling sympathy and outrage.”
“Oleanna” will continue to run on weekends from October 13 to 29 in the François Fine Arts Building Studio Theatre. Performances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission tickets are priced at $15, with a reduced rate of $10 available for seniors aged 65 and older. Admission is free for all Sul Ross State University students, faculty, and staff with valid identification, as well as U.S. veterans.
