World-renowned Expert Dr. Matthew R. Bennett to Deliver Keynote
Mark your calendars for November 10-11 as the Center for Big Bend Studies (CBBS) at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, prepares to host its prestigious 29th annual conference. The event will take place both on the Sul Ross campus and virtually, with online registration now open.
Dr. Matthew R. Bennett, a distinguished geologist, world-renowned footprint expert, and Head of the Institute for Landscape and Human Evolution at Bournemouth University in England, will serve as this year’s keynote speaker. Dr. Bennett led an international team of scientists in the groundbreaking discovery of the oldest evidence of humans in North America. His recent revelation of ancient human footprints in White Sands National Park has garnered global attention, featuring in prominent media outlets such as National Geographic, PBS, Science Magazine, NPR, and The Atlantic.

During his presentation, Dr. Bennett will delve into the mysteries of the footprints at White Sands, shedding light on life during the Ice Age. He will explore the implications of these findings for understanding the peopling of the Americas. American archaeology stands at the threshold of a paradigm shift, where the discovered footprints will reshape our understanding of the first Americans in the years to come.
In addition to Dr. Bennett’s keynote, the conference will feature more than 30 enlightening presentations covering various facets of the history, archaeology, and culture of the Big Bend and northern Mexico.

The Friday night banquet and keynote presentation will be held at the historic Granada Theater in downtown Alpine. Banquet registration is priced at $45 for early registrants (before October 18) and $50 thereafter, with a registration deadline of October 25. Due to limited seating, early registration is strongly encouraged.
