Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, prepare for the grand finale of the 2023 Open Weekend Events at the Davis Mountains Preserve! This highly anticipated event, the last of its kind this year, promises to be an unforgettable experience in the heart of Texas’ natural beauty.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Davis Mountains, the Davis Mountains Preserve is typically reserved for research and conservation-related activities. However, on select weekends throughout the year, it opens its gates to the public, providing a unique opportunity to connect with nature.
In a significant update for 2023, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has announced that reservations are no longer required to attend Open Events at the preserve, with the exception of occasional special events. This change simplifies the process for nature enthusiasts eager to explore this pristine wilderness.
The upcoming and final Open Weekend Event is scheduled to take place from October 20th to October 22nd, 2023. During this event, visitors can indulge in camping, hiking, biking, equestrian activities, picnics, photography, birding, and more. The preserve opens its gates at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and remains accessible until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Before attending, please take note of the following guidelines for Open Event attendees:
- High-clearance, street-legal vehicles are necessary for traveling beyond the McIvor Conservation Center.
- Campfires are strictly prohibited on the preserve.
- Firearms are not allowed on the premises.
- Any individual under the age of 18 must be supervised by an accompanying adult.
- With the exception of licensed service animals for assistance, no pets are permitted on the preserve.
Additionally, visitors are encouraged to practice responsible environmental stewardship by packing in and packing out all waste. Public restrooms are available at the McIvor Conservation Center.
To ensure a comfortable and safe experience, attendees should come prepared with ample food and water, rain gear, hiking boots, sunscreen, and hats, considering the unpredictable weather conditions on the preserve.

One of the highlight activities is the hike to Baldy Peak of Mount Livermore, rated as strenuous with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet. Depending on individual ability, this trail typically takes a fit hiker 4-6 hours to complete, excluding drive time to the trailhead. It’s essential to note that on Open Days, the preserve gates close promptly at 5:00 p.m., so planning accordingly is advised.
The Davis Mountains Preserve beckons all nature enthusiasts and adventurers to explore its breathtaking landscapes, and the upcoming Open Weekend Event promises to be a grand culmination of a year filled with outdoor wonders. Don’t miss this last opportunity to connect with the untamed beauty of Texas’ wilderness.
