Trans-Pecos Communities Bid Farewell to Iconic Porter’s Stores, Welcome Lowe’s Markets

The heart of the Trans-Pecos region is bracing for a significant change as the beloved Porter’s stores, deeply embedded in the local fabric of Marfa, Presidio, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Van Horn, transition to new ownership. A sale agreement with Lowe’s Markets, a Texan company based in Littlefield, is set to take effect on December 1, 2023. Porter’s, an enduring symbol of hard work, honesty, and community care, has been a cherished part of these towns for 78 years.

The Porter family’s enduring legacy in the Trans-Pecos area began when Ray and Tiny Porter made the journey from Colepool, OK, to Andrews County in the 1940s. Their first store, Modern Foods, marked the inception of a family-owned business rooted in the values of dedication and community service. Over the years, the baton of ownership was passed from generation to generation, with Denny Porter taking the helm, followed by his sons, Trae and Judd, and his son-in-law, T.O. Clark. Throughout the decades, as the stores went through different names, the commitment to hard work, honesty, and community engagement remained unwavering.

These Porter’s locations, scattered across the Trans-Pecos region, have played a pivotal role in the lives of the communities they serve. From Marfa’s artistic enclave to Presidio’s border-town vitality, Alpine’s collegiate charm, Fort Davis’s historic allure, and Van Horn’s desert resilience, each store has been a beacon of quality and service.

In a poignant turn of events, the Porter Family’s sale agreement with Lowe’s Markets ensures that the values of dedication, honesty, and community care, which have defined Porter’s, will persist under new stewardship.

Lowe’s Markets, with roots dating back to 1963, mirrors the same unwavering commitment to customers and community that has been a hallmark of Porter’s. Their shared values promise a seamless continuation of the service that Trans-Pecos residents have come to depend on.

As the Porter family and their dedicated team members prepare to serve their final Thanksgiving season under their ownership, they extend their profound appreciation to the communities that have embraced them throughout the years. While the ownership may change, the legacy of dedication and community spirit, established by Ray and Tiny Porter, will continue to flourish under the Lowe family’s guidance.

This transition marks a significant milestone in the history of the Trans-Pecos region, yet it is also a testament to the enduring spirit of these communities. Marfa, Presidio, Alpine, Fort Davis, and Van Horn will continue to thrive as they welcome Lowe’s Markets, a company that shares their values and commitment to local excellence. The bonds of hard work, honesty, and community care that have defined Porter’s will remain an integral part of the Trans-Pecos landscape for generations to come.
