Sul Ross State University is delighted to announce its selection as the recipient of a prestigious grant from the U.S. Department of Education dedicated to fostering the development of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI). This significant achievement was confirmed in an official statement released by the office of Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas).

Expressing his gratitude for Senator Cornyn’s unwavering support, President Carlos Hernandez remarked, “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Senator Cornyn for his steadfast support of Sul Ross State University and our endeavors in West Texas. These initiatives hold immense potential to profoundly impact student success, which is our utmost priority.”

The grant, totaling an impressive $2,993,974, will be allocated over a span of five years. Under the HSI program, these funds will serve as a catalyst for expanding educational opportunities for Hispanic students and enhancing their academic achievements. Additionally, the grant aims to elevate the quality of academic programs while bolstering the overall institutional stability.

A key focus of this grant, titled “Digital Transformation and Modernization in Far West Texas,” is the modernization of laboratory facilities, classrooms, and various learning spaces across at least six academic programs. This initiative will include a substantial investment in state-of-the-art equipment for the Industrial Technology program.

Among the broader objectives are increasing student enrollment, augmenting the annual count of degrees and certificates conferred, ensuring greater access to cutting-edge technology, and fostering collaborative opportunities for students. Furthermore, the grant endeavors to boost the percentage of graduates who secure employment within one year of earning their degrees.
