Video & Photos: Chinati’s Autumnal Equinox Event Shines Spotlight on Robert Irwin’s Masterpiece

Today, visitors flocked to Chinati Museum to experience the profound blend of art and nature during sunrise and sunset viewing hours. Chinati, the acclaimed contemporary art museum in Marfa, Texas, invited art enthusiasts and nature lovers to experience Robert Irwin’s monumental masterpiece, “untitled (dawn to dusk).”

This remarkable artwork has been a part of the Chinati Foundation’s permanent collection since 2016. With over 90 people attending the morning viewing and more than 100 captivated by the mesmerizing sunset, the event marked a significant celebration of art, nature, and the changing seasons under the vast West Texas sky.

As Julie Carey from Chinati explained, “Irwin determined every aspect of the artwork, from the architecture to the plants.” The building was constructed in the footprint of the former Hospital of Fort D.A Russell in Marfa, forming a C-shaped structure with entryways that alluded to the original hospital’s ruins.

The building divided into a dark side and a light side, allowing visitors to choose their unique experience as they traversed from darkness to light, connecting with the artwork in their way.
