Today, on the occasion of the autumnal equinox, Chinati, the esteemed contemporary art museum in Marfa, Texas, extends a special invitation to art enthusiasts and nature lovers. This unique opportunity allows visitors to experience Robert Irwin’s monumental masterpiece, “untitled (dawn to dusk),” during sunrise and sunset viewing hours, creating a profound fusion of art and nature.
A Vision 17 Years in the Making
The roots of “untitled (dawn to dusk)” stretch back to 1999 when Robert Irwin began crafting his vision for a transformative piece of art. The project would see the transformation of a long-abandoned former army hospital site adjacent to Chinati’s campus. This C-shaped concrete structure, enveloped by windows and enclosing a central courtyard, provided the canvas for Irwin’s creative genius.
A Play of Light and Space
Inside the building, the magic unfolds. It is formally divided into two halves, one dark and the other light. Transparent scrim walls stretch from floor to ceiling, dividing the wings in black and white. These ever-changing scrim walls capture the essence of natural light, a key element in Irwin’s exploration of perception through spatial manipulation.
Bringing Nature into Art
The central courtyard has been transformed into a garden defined by concrete paths and Corten steel-lined raised beds. Two rows of honey mesquite trees flank the central planter, creating a tranquil space. Notable in the garden are niches with benches and a tableau of large basalt columns, all masterfully curated by Irwin himself.
A Culmination of a Lifelong Exploration
“untitled (dawn to dusk)” is not just Irwin’s largest work to date; it represents the culmination of his decades-long exploration of perception, space, and light. Robert Irwin’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of art and challenging our perceptions is evident in this masterpiece.
