As the scorching summer heat envelops West Texas, preparations are already underway for the heartwarming event known as “Christmas in Boquillas 2023.” Scheduled for December 21st, this annual tradition aims to spread holiday joy to the children of Boquillas, Mexico, and relies on the generosity of the community to make it a success.
Initiated by Collette Barragan, the event’s organizer, this will mark the third consecutive year of bringing holiday cheer to the children of Boquillas. The project’s success hinges on donations from a collaborative group on Facebook, as well as contributions from Barragan’s friends, family, and local community members.
Barragan has devised a thoughtful and well-organized process to ensure that every gift reaches its intended recipient. Those who wish to participate are encouraged to send their gifts to her address. Upon receiving these donations, Barragan enlists the help of her high school students to meticulously sort, select, and wrap each gift with care. Every present is then designated for a child in Boquillas, Mexico, ensuring a personalized touch for the holiday season.
The logistics of transporting these gifts to Boquillas is no small feat. Barragan is collaborating with individuals from Big Bend National Park (BBNP) and the surrounding areas to coordinate the effort. On the designated day, a small Uhaul will be utilized to transport the collected gifts to the children across the border.
The extensive planning required for “Christmas in Boquillas” begins well in advance, even as the summer season takes hold. The wish list created by Barragan’s students and herself has been shared early to allow ample time for contributions and preparations. With this careful planning, the aim is to ensure that the event remains a cherished and unforgettable Christmas experience for all involved.
