Journey Through Texas’ Peaks: The Davis Mountains Scenic Loop Experience

The Big Bend Region, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, is a must-visit destination in Texas. One of the crowning jewels of this region is the town of Fort Davis. Nestled in the heart of the Davis Mountains, Fort Davis is not just a stopover. It’s a start to one of the most captivating road trips one could embark upon. Before we dive into the mesmerizing highlights of this drive, let’s navigate you there!

Directions: From the center of Fort Davis, there are two primary ways to start the loop:

  1. Head west on Hwy 118 from the northern part of town.
  2. Drive south out of town on Hwy 17. After just a few miles, take a turn onto Hwy 166 to begin the loop. (Recommended)

A Tour Through Texas Skies: As you commence your journey on Hwy 166, the contrasting vistas on either side command your attention. On your left, the rolling hills and expansive grasslands play host to the region’s unique wildlife – from pronghorns to the mischievous javelinas. To the right, Blue Mountain rises majestically, aptly named for its distinctive hue.

A notable landmark on this route is the Point of Rocks. It’s more than just a pit-stop; it’s an opportunity to climb and bask in panoramic views of the surroundings. Further into the journey, the Crow’s Nest and the Bloys Camp Meeting stand testament to the region’s rich history and heritage.

As you meander through, consider a detour on RM 505. Especially if bird-watching piques your interest. This stretch has been graced by the presence of hawks, falcons, and the majestic golden eagle.

Back on Hwy 166, the imposing Sawtooth Mountain looms in the distance, its jagged silhouette leaving no doubts about its naming. A curve in the road and you merge onto Hwy 118, the stretch that many, including myself, believe to be the heart of this scenic loop. Here, the Laurence E. Woods roadside park awaits explorers. A trek into the Madera Canyon is a delight for nature lovers (prior check for availability is suggested).

The highway then takes its travelers past the iconic McDonald Observatory, a window to the vast cosmos. Just when you think the journey could offer no more, the Davis Mountains State Park appears, housing the stunning Skyline Drive and the historic Indian Lodge.

Upon returning to Fort Davis, the loop might be complete, but the adventure isn’t. The Fort Davis National Historic site stands as a testament to the rich history of the region, and the town offers delightful eateries and shopping venues.

The Davis Mountains Scenic Loop is more than just a drive; it’s a journey through time, nature, and breathtaking beauty. Whether on bike or by car, the experience remains unparalleled, making it a trip worth embarking upon time and again.

As you wind down your day, let Fort Davis, Texas’ highest village, captivate you with its charm, ensuring your visit to the Big Bend Region is one for the books.
