Marathon ISD to Hold Public Meeting on Proposed 2023-2024 Budget and Tax Rate

Marathon Independent School District (MISD) has announced a public meeting set for 6:00 PM on Monday, August 28, 2023, at the MISD High School Library/Board Meeting Room located at 109 N 5th Street, Marathon, TX. The meeting’s purpose includes the discussion and possible adoption of the 2023-2024 proposed budget and the proposed 2023 tax rate.

According to the budget summary report, the proposed 2023-2024 budget has notable changes from the previous year’s aggregate and per pupil expenditures. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The proposed budget for instruction has increased from $933,096 to $983,712, raising per pupil spending from $15,815 to $16,961.
  • Spending on curriculum development and staff development sees a notable jump from $7,268 to $17,074, causing an increase in per pupil spending from $123 to $294.
  • A decrease is observed in school leadership expenditures from $121,778 to $104,317, resulting in per pupil costs dropping from $2,064 to $1,799.
  • General administration expenses are set to reduce from $293,352 to $254,826, with per pupil costs decreasing from $4,972 to $4,394.

Other expenditure areas, such as instructional resources, media services, and guidance and counseling, have seen both increases and decreases. The district’s operations have also noted shifts in costs for areas like plant maintenance, security and monitoring, and data processing.

Additionally, there is a notable change in debt service, with the proposed budget highlighting a shift from leases/SBITAs, previously at $10,000, to a debt service amounting to $35,000.

  1. Watch every dollar coming in and going out of this ISD, locals. Slippery folks running the show (and state) right now. Incompetence & negligence is NOT the dynamic duo you want running a small, rural school district. FBI has been tipped off, already. Fed, state, and your local tax dollars should be going to the employees teaching and helping students, not the lawyers in Dallas defending and protecting the district at every turn. Public info request is in and I’ll share what I learn ASAP. I hate wasted public money. Students deserve better.
