In the midst of the barren landscape near Valentine, Texas, just west of Marfa, stands an art installation that continues to be a magnetic pull for visitors from around the world. Prada Marfa, a faux boutique with a sleek storefront displaying luxury goods, is more than just a roadside attraction; it’s a cultural icon that embodies the fusion of art, fashion, and whimsy.

A Symbol of Modern Culture
Prada Marfa was created by artists Elmgreen and Dragset and inaugurated in 2005. Since then, it has become a favorite spot for tourists, artists, and photographers alike. Its inexplicable location and striking appearance have made it a subject of fascination and the backdrop for countless photographs.
More Than Just a Photo Stop
While most of the highway is desolate, there’s nearly always a car or four stopped at Prada Marfa. From tourists snapping the quintessential selfie to car enthusiasts capturing their rides, to commercial photo shoots for brands large and small, this unlikely art installation has become a gathering place for various creative expressions.
One such example is Haley Jacobs, Owner of Spurrin’ Scrubs, who was doing a photo shoot for her product line when Big Bend Times was there. As a 25-year-old traveling Medical Laboratory Scientist, Haley’s love for western fashion and the agriculture industry has shaped her unique brand of fashion medical scrubs.
Bridging Art, Fashion, and Community
Prada Marfa’s appeal extends beyond its artistic conception. It has become a landmark that bridges different worlds: art enthusiasts, fashion aficionados, commercial brands, and individuals and entrepreneurs like Haley who seek a connection with the piece.
Whether it’s a traveler passing by or a brand engaging in a commercial shoot, Prada Marfa continues to draw attention and admiration. Its isolated location serves as a dramatic contrast to the modern and luxurious appeal of the installation, creating a surreal and captivating experience for all who visit.
