Trans-Pecos Icon Doug Moreland Unveils His 10th Album “Terlingua Moon”

The artistic soul of the Trans-Pecos region, Doug Moreland, has released his tenth full-length album, “Terlingua Moon.” The Fort Davis-based artist brings together a rich tapestry of influences, encapsulating everything from Western Swing dancehall to his love for the landscapes and traditions of West Texas.

“Terlingua Moon,” released this year, features ten tracks, including compositions written solely by Moreland as well as collaborations with artists such as Billy Applegate, Roger Moon, Alex Teller, and Fernando Maldonado. A distinctive track, “i declare,” even integrates words by Thomas Jefferson, set to music by Doug himself.

Moreland’s journey began in the Davis Mountains of far west Texas. After embarking on a musical career in 1992, he spent seven years traveling across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Tennessee. Alongside his music, Moreland explored other artistic avenues such as chainsaw carving, vehicle renovation, and became a community icon in his great-great-grandparents’ hometown of Manchac, Texas.

In Manchac, his shop “Cattlelacs” became a symbol of his creativity, adorned with topless, vintage Cadillacs painted like the Texas flag and complete with giant cattle horns. For 13 years, Doug hosted “Calfry,” a one-day music event with bands, chainsaw carving demonstrations, and a calf fry cookoff.

Doug’s passion for chainsaw carving led him to join forces with renowned wood-worker R.L. Blair, known for his 40-year expertise in the business and contract work done for Disney© theme parks. This partnership elevated Doug’s skills and creativity to new heights.

In 2017, Moreland shifted gears and moved towards full-time travel with his family. His adventures led him to explore the U.S. and parts of Mexico, but ultimately he returned to his original hometown of Fort Davis, Texas, where he now carves wood sculptures at his new shop in the heart of the picturesque tourist town.

Not only has Moreland showcased his multifaceted talents in music, carving, and vehicle renovation, but he has also introduced his beloved McNab/Border Collie pup, Holly-peño, to the national stage. The talented canine could sing, speak, and even play the fiddle, often performing alongside Moreland.

Doug Moreland continues to entertain with his full band around the “far out” west Texas region and his new album “Terlingua Moon” promises to be a reflection of his diverse and vibrant artistic career.
