Last week, a routine traffic stop turned serious when Presidio County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered an arsenal of weapons and narcotics. While assisting the U.S. Border Patrol around 9:00 a.m. on FM 170, approximately 20 miles West of Presidio, deputies uncovered two AR-15 rifles, four 30-round magazines, nearly 400 rounds of .223 ammunition, and body armor. Additionally, 6 grams of cocaine was found in the vehicle.
Further investigation revealed that the driver had a previous conviction in March 2021 for human smuggling. After serving two years in federal prison, he was released on probation. The passenger and his wife also had a concerning criminal history, with convictions in Wyoming related to harboring undocumented individuals. Both were also currently on probation.
The discoveries suggest that the weapons might have been intended for smuggling into Mexico. The driver now faces new charges, including Possession of a Substance in Penalty Group 1, Cocaine, which is considered a 2nd Degree Felony. He is currently being held in the Presidio County Jail.
