Today, Friday, August 4, marks the official beginning of the 134th Bloys Camp Meeting, a treasured annual tradition held in Skillman Grove in the scenic Davis Mountains of West Texas. This significant event, open to all denominations, commences with the first meal served at 6:00 pm, followed by the inaugural church service at 8:00 pm.
The Bloys Camp Meeting, established in 1890 by the Rev. W.B. Bloys, is organized by the Bloys Campmeeting Association. It has grown from a small gathering of 48 people to a vibrant community event that now welcomes around 2,500 worshipers every year.
Attendees started moving into the campground on Wednesday, August 2, in anticipation of today’s official kickoff. The five-day spiritual retreat is filled with worship, fellowship, and bonding, and it culminates in a closing service on Wednesday, August 9 at 8:00 pm.
Generations of families in West Texas have made the Bloys Camp Meeting a part of their spiritual lives, with some attending for 60 or 70 consecutive years. The association ensures the continuity of this tradition by planning the meeting dates three years in advance. Upcoming start dates are set for August 2, 2024, and August 5, 2025.
