Reach for the Stars: McDonald Observatory Opens Large Telescopes to Public on Special Viewing Nights

McDonald Observatory is inviting the public to explore the cosmos on select nights throughout the year with its Special Viewing Nights. Participants can witness breathtaking astronomical sights through the Observatory’s large research telescopes, offering an experience suitable for visitors of any level of expertise.

Located at Mount Locke, the Special Viewing Nights provide access to two primary telescopes. The 36-inch Telescope, a staff and visitor favorite, is situated just a few steps away from the Astronomers Lodge. Passes for this intimate experience in a small group setting are available for $100 per person.

For those interested in an even more magnificent view, the Otto Struve 82-inch (2.1m) telescope offers an extraordinary experience. Known as one of the largest and finest telescopes in the world through which routine public viewing is conducted, it stands as a central attraction. Passes for this program are priced at $150 per person.

The Special Viewing Nights are designed to be approachable for both novices and experienced stargazers, with staff ready to assist beginners. Moreover, the 36-inch Telescope is often larger than what many people have ever had the opportunity to utilize, ensuring that all visitors will find the views impressive.

While the experience is open to most, it’s worth noting that these programs are best suited for individuals over 10 years old. Families with younger children are strongly encouraged to attend the Observatory’s Star Party program instead.

The experience does come with some accessibility considerations. Both the 36-inch and 82-inch domes are not wheelchair accessible, and the program involves the use of a step ladder and takes place in low levels of illumination. It’s also crucial for visitors to know that participating in both the Star Party and a Special Viewing Night program on the same evening is not feasible.

If interested in turning the adventure into an overnight stay, the Astronomers Lodge may have accommodations available. Friends of McDonald Observatory also receive advanced notice of the Special Viewing schedule, which is published every four months.

More information, including the booking of passes, can be found on the McDonald Observatory’s website: Special Viewing Nights at McDonald Observatory.

Explore the cosmos like never before and take part in a unique opportunity to witness celestial wonders. Whether you are a seasoned astronomer or taking your first look through a telescope, McDonald Observatory’s Special Viewing Nights offer an unforgettable experience.
