The Texas Land Conservancy (TLC) is celebrating a significant conservation victory as it embraces the breathtaking 9,269-acre Christmas Mountains Preserve into its esteemed portfolio of protected properties. Nestled in the scenic expanse of southern Brewster County, close to the renowned city of Terlingua and neighboring the iconic Big Bend National Park, this historic land was once owned by the state of Texas and is now entrusted to the Texas State University System (TSUS) for research purposes.

Through a collaborative partnership with The Conservation Fund, TLC placed a conservation easement on the Christmas Mountains Preserve in 1991, which was recently transferred officially to TLC at the close of 2022. As the preserve’s new steward, TLC’s dedicated team will be responsible for vigilant monitoring to ensure the thriving wildlife habitats and majestic landscapes continue to flourish.

The preserve boasts a unique ecosystem, ranging from the Chihuahuan Desert in the lowlands to the lush grasslands on the steep slopes and the Texas sotol grasslands with desert shrubs at higher elevations. Preserving this ecological treasure not only safeguards countless acres of irreplaceable habitat but also opens doors for education, scientific research, and archaeological exploration for generations to come.

The Texas State University System plans to establish a research and education center adjacent to the preserve, creating a hub for local, national, and international educators and researchers to delve into its untamed beauty. This center will allow for in-depth studies of vegetation, wildlife, geology, and climate, enabling a better understanding of the preserve’s current and future states. Moreover, archaeological discoveries within its streams and rock formations hold the promise of uncovering valuable insights into the preserve’s storied past.

With its rich biodiversity, the Christmas Mountains Preserve is home to a variety of native wildlife, including ground squirrels, jackrabbits, mule deer, coyotes, foxes, snakes, and lizards. Over the years, reported sightings of black bears and mountain lions have further piqued interest in this natural wonder. Additionally, the preserve’s historical significance as a former prospecting site for mining adds an intriguing layer of exploration.

Positioned alongside the iconic Big Bend National Park and joining other protected lands in West Texas, the Christmas Mountains Preserve not only secures a bright future but also ensures the preservation of yet-to-be-discovered historic treasures.

As TLC embarks on this exciting conservation journey, the organization pledges to keep its supporters informed about the fascinating projects and initiatives within the preserve. The community’s involvement and support remain crucial to the long-term success and sustainability of this remarkable endeavor. TLC extends its heartfelt gratitude to all partners for entrusting them with this invaluable responsibility, creating a promising future for Texas’ natural heritage.
