Explore Davis Mountains Preserve during Open Weekend August 25 through 27

The Nature Conservancy invites nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers to mark their calendars for the upcoming Open Preserve Weekend at the picturesque Davis Mountains Preserve. Taking place from August 25th to August 27th, this three-day event offers a unique opportunity to explore the natural wonders of West Texas. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or simply looking for a memorable day trip, all are welcome to participate in this exciting event.

The Davis Mountains Preserve, managed by The Nature Conservancy, is a true treasure of West Texas. To make the most of your visit, it’s important to note the open event requirements. High-clearance, street-legal vehicles are necessary for driving past the McIvor Conservation Center. While camping is permitted, campfires are prohibited on the preserve. Additionally, firearms are not allowed, and individuals under the age of 18 must be supervised by an accompanying adult. With the exception of licensed service animals, pets are not permitted on the preserve.

To ensure a responsible and enjoyable experience, visitors are advised to pack in and pack out all waste. Public restrooms are available at the McIvor Conservation Center for convenience. It’s also recommended to bring an ample supply of food, water, rain gear, hiking boots, sunscreen, and hats for any of the trails. As weather conditions can be unpredictable on the preserve, it’s essential to come prepared for a wide range of conditions.

One of the highlight activities during the Open Preserve Weekend is the hike to Baldy Peak of Mount Livermore. Rated as strenuous, this trail presents a challenge with an elevation gain of 1,800 feet. On average, a fit hiker can expect to spend 4-6 hours completing the trail, not including drive time to the trailhead. It’s important to note that the gates close at 5:00 p.m. on Open Days, so planning accordingly is crucial.
